Pick of the Week
The Substance
Coralie Fargeat's unflinching satire addresses the oppressive nature of women's appearance and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents an inspired portrayal playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity forced into starring in a workout series on television. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome process called this experimental method. This produces a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in an increasingly vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This classic whodunit mystery includes Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for a hiatus from covering international wars to join a high-end voyage accompanied by a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her husband, and other affluent individuals. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship overnight and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Out now, on Netflix
This Supernatural Story
The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities in this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage fully commits to his eccentric image through this self-referential adventure. He plays an egotistical film star playing himself who agrees to a lucrative offer to appear at a festive event on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, his unique performing skills proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids frightened. When Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and locked up in a cellar, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel
This Espionage Thriller
This week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh delivers a espionage tale as tight like the turtlenecks used by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a double agent among the team from a group of five – one of whom is his own wife. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
