Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
