A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
